Cuban Revolution
In 1952, government corruption in Havana is at an all time high. Fidel Castro is running for congress but the self appointed chief of the military Fulgencio Bastista cancels the Cuban elections and pushes out the president Carlos Prio Socarras and takes control of the island republic. On July 26 1953, Castro makes a radical movement. He forms a group of about 150 men and attacks one of Cuba's biggest military divisions. They failed and many of them died. Castro was put in jail along with some other of his men. Batista planned to killed Castro when he was released from jail, so Castro fled to Mexico.
On November 26, 1956 Castro returns from Mexico with a few dozen men and they were ambushed, most of them were killed but Castro and about two dozen of his men survived. Castro and the survivors hid in the mountains for 2 years, building a revolutionary army. Batista continued to be in power of Cuba and the country was getting more and more agitated with his corruption. On January 1, 1959, Batista and the men in power left the country in awareness of Castro's coup d'état and the growing of Castro's guerilla army. Also due to his unpopularity, the US was no longer a supporter of his presidency and is another reason why Batista feared for his life. |
The nation celebrated when Batista left in hope for a new beginning. Castro returned to Havana after Batista fled and took control and starts to rally the people. In 1959, after the revolution is over and Castro is giving a speech on a podium in front of the citizens, a bunch of white doves land on his shoulder and arm. The doves stay on him throughout his speech. The dove for the Cuban citizens was a symbol for their religion, and they believed that meant Castro was the deliverer for their country, and he was the one who would bring hope to Cuba.
The video below shows the influence of Fidel Castro and how the citizens of Cuba began to rally and rebel against the government in hopes for a better future for their country. It shows how many of their actions led to mobbing and destruction, and all this chaos was led by Castro in his attempt to coup against Batista.
